A flexible and wearable sensor system that employs light to capture exact measurements of human health has been developed by scientists at IIT Bhubaneswar.
This wearable patch can be worn on any region of the body. It can read body data such as temperature, heart rate, facial motions, respiration and bending or stretching. A feature for checking blood pressure is currently being added by the team as stated by Professor Rajan Jha who is heading the work in IIT Bhubaneswar at Nanophotonics and Plasmonics Laboratory in the School of Basic Sciences.
He claimed that such a wearable device is particularly sensitive and precise since the measurements are based on changes in the light characteristics rather than electricity as in electronic devices. An added advantage of this technology is its capability to simultaneously measure various parameters.
According to Virendra Kumar Tewari, director of IIT Bhubaneswar, these innovative wearable optical devices have the potential to revolutionize healthcare services. (Times of India, Aug 12, 2022)
